If it is often okay for a woman to put her hands on a man. Why is it such a big deal when a man hits a woman? If I were to hit my boyfriend many people would not worry about it but if he were to hit me then it would different. I think that people should be treated the same and if I hit him I should have some kind punishment. Maybe men don't report it because they are scared what their friends will think like the are weak or something like that. But women and men should have the same kind of consequences.

Hi Morgan!
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that equality is a desired and "ideal" value, it is not a "real" value. And in this instance, it probably shouldn't be. You have to understand family violence from a historical context. It has only been fairly recently since it was NOT ok to batter women. It is symptomatic of a larger value that women are less than men. Indeed, on average, women are about 20% smaller than men. Thus, she will not do as damage to a man with her bare hands as he could. So until women and men stand toe-to-toe and pound-for-pound, then it is NOT ok for a man to strike a woman. It may not be fair, but that's life!
